BCCK host "rugby night" in Seoul March 18

Once again, the British Chamber of Commerce are hosting a rugby night where they will enjoy dinner, maybe a drink or two and an evening talking, hearing about and bragging (probably from Welsh and Kiwi attendees) on rugby...
Expect visits from local Internationals, women's teams, something from the grass roots and prizes galore. There will also be a chance to hear how you can get behind the upcoming visit of England Counties to Korea in June....
And if rugby isn't your game, Touch will also be featured...a non-contact sport but still with an oval ball.

To sign up for the dinner, visit http://www.bcck.or.kr/mod/event/event_view.asp?sn=186

Those International Touch Seoul shirts get everywhere!

This time spotted at the recent Dow Corning tennis tournament in Midland Michigan.....a little chilly to wear these sporty numbers at this time of the year!!

Korea Touch friends take care of the nation's coastline

Sungjoon Kim (pictured with his proud parents) really enjoyed learning a new sport when he took up Touch a couple of years ago. So much, that when the ITS 2007 tournament was being organised, he stepped up to help raise awareness amongst Koreans. The call of duty took Sungjoon away from Touch last year and now he's busy taking care of the peninsula's coastline in the Korean Coastguard Service. We hope he'll be back to participate in the growth of Touch once his service days are over. Sungjoon, we need you; as a player or as an administrator...we need your enthusiasm!!

New book highlights Touch and Rugby in Korea

Joon-ang Daily reporter Moon, Gwanglip or Joe Moon has produced a totally new angle with his book "Itaewon: Gateway to the world". In it, he tracks the work of expats, mainly in and around the Itaewon area, who are bringing samples of their own culture to enrich Korea. Amongst some incredible stories of audacity and charity, the more humble sports of rugby and Touch find their place. Coverage includes descriptions, write ups and wonderful photos of Seoul Sisters (http://www.ssrfc.com/), Han River Pirates (www.hanriverpiratesrugby.com) and Seoul Survivors (http://www.survivorsrfc.com/) in rugby and in Touch, the work of the Korea Touch people http://www.koreatouch.com/ and especially the Spire Touch Championships.

Available in all good book stores....Bookstore clerks will help you find it if you say you are searching for "Itaewon Eseo Segye Reul Manada" (Literally, translated into "Meet the World at Itaewon") (That is the Korean title.)

Its publisher is JoongAng Books
Writer's name is Moon Gwang-lip

Touch starts Sat 14 9:30-11:30 on Yongsan Family Park

What more romantic start to Valentines Day could there be than a run around of pick-up Touch on Yongsan Family Park....(OK, too many innuendos and double entendres there)...
Anyway, weather and dust permitting...we are on for Sat morning, chance to battle the winter flab and to hone skills prior to the first tournament of the year which is scheduled for March 21.

Warning;
We won't play if the yellow dust level is above 400 see this link http://web.kma.go.kr/eng/asi/asi_02_02.jsp
We won't play if it is raining, but if it is just drizzle, we should be good to go.
A frost won't keep us away.

Yongsan Family Park can be found near the new national museum on the south side of Yongsan base, across the road from Ichon subway station (north east of the subway station) and at the foot of the Dongjak bridge flyover.

Korea Rugby Union Presidents XV v England Counties "a damn close thing"

If recent form of Korea's national team is anything to go by and England Counties stay true to form, this should be a cracker in June...
The England Counties side was launched in 2002 to give amateur and semi-professional players from outside the Zurich Premiership the opportunity to play international rugby.
The Counties toured Chile that year, winning all three games and beating the Chilean national side 33-21 in Santiago. Chile currently rank 24 in the world, just behind Korea at 22.
The next year's European tour saw them beat Romania A 26-24 before defeats against Romania's test team (45-23) (Romania are currently ranked 17 in the world) and France Amateurs (26-24). The French won the second meeting between the sides 27-18 at Henley in December.

This would suggest that the match will be a fantastic contest if Korea field close to their national team.

England Counties rugby select side for Ireland...insight for Korea?

http://www.england-rugby.com/englandrugby/index.cfm?fuseaction=News.News_Detail&storyid=21848
The link shows the team that will play Ireland clubs in Dublin on Feb 27th (on the eve of the full international). They also play the equivalent French team at Twickenham this year. Does this give us any insight into the kind of side that will come to Korea in June? And if it is the same side, which is suggested by their comments in this article, maybe they will be better prepared than we thought.....beware, Korea! Anyway, they seem fired up for the trip here "touring Korea and Japan will be an amazing experience for everyone involved"

CORK (Council of Rugby in Korea) launched

A new organisation aimed at boosting rugby in Korea has been created and last night was the foundation ceremony. CORK will try to build a grass roots organisation across the whole of Korea using the "Sport for All" approach to get recognition and funding. Since rugby is linked so strongly with English, it is envisaged that English/Rugby coaching schools could be set up, staffed ideally by English native speakers as volunteer coaches. On this basis, it is expected that local authorities would support with the provision safe and suitable playing facilities.

Initially, the organisation wanted to incorporate Touch. This would be anathema to the Touch's governing body, the Federation of International Touch, and your correspondent implored CORK to support an entirely seperate organisation for Touch and for the two to collaborate on matters of interest. There is certainly synergy to be found in searching for grounds and in some cases, coaches too.

CORK could do wonders for rugby in Korea; it could catch all those who learn the sport at school but fail to carry on afterwards. And it can be a place for people to learn to love rugby even if they didn't play it as a student.

Feedback from the international community is positive; foreign rugby afficianados would love for there to be more rugby to play, watch and to encourage engagement with the local community. This is encouraging and anyone across the peninsula interested in volunteering their services as a coach or wanting to play rugby locally should post below and more information can be sent along with your local contact.

Bonne chance CORK!!!http://www.korearugby.org/

꽃보다 남자 Rugby in Boys over Flowers (Kkot-boda Namja), the most popular drama in Korea?

Recently, the most popular drama these days, Boys over Flowers (Kkot-boda Namja, 꽃보다 남자), helped to bring viewers back to watching dramas- over 30 % of all Korean households watching the drama. Its original work is Japanese manga (cartoon), and due to its popularity, it has been adapted into TV series by Taiwan, Japan, and most recently Korea.

In the drama, one of the main characters plays rugby as a part of "aristocratic" lessons to be a successor of a conglomerate (chaebol). Since the drama leads the latest fashion and trend in Korea, his rugby shirt was completely sold out soon after one of the 4 flowers (F4) wore on the drama.

Let's see if the drama fans will actually get into Rugby rather than his T-shirt.

Yu Young-nam, the first Korean for Japan Top League Final

Young-nam (Dankook Uni-Sangmu-Sanyo) will be the first Korean player for the Japanese Top League final this year with the first record of playing all the consecutive 13 matches.

To have such the honor, he had to go through obstacles and biases toward Koreans in Japan and compete not only with Japanese players but Kiwis and Aussies as a foreign player.

The moment when he started overcoming such difficuties and winning recognition was the Asian Five Nations match against Japan.
I am sure that he will be repesenting Korea at the A5N this year (Home games: April 25th Singapore/May 9th Hongkong) and hopefully for the match against England Counties (June 5th).
And I hope he gives his impressions of the final match to our blog visitors soon.

-2001 Korea U-19 team-
Please cheer for him to raise the Top-league trophy on Sunday!
