More rugby this weekend 2nd May

Survivors v Daesin....at Ansan....more details can be found on Facebook....

Another message from Seoul Sisters

Hi Everyone!
Here are the directions to the field this Saturday. Don't forget: if you want to come, you need to email me your name as it appears on your passport, passport number, and nationality. If you are having trouble finding the field, please call me at 010-8098-3271.

SubwayThe pitch is in the southeast corner of Seoul in the lovely city of Seongnam. The field is just inside Seongnam on the Seoul/Seongnam border. The name of the place is the 'Korean Military Center for Athletics' (or something like that) There are two nearby subways stations one is called Bokjeong Station which is on line 8 (pink) and the yellow Bundang line. Get off there, and head North. Walk up to the red and white SK gas station and take a right at the intersection. Go straight for .a bit and you'll see a big Seoul 1988 Olympics Tiger sign. That's the gate you need to enter for the field. It's a 3 minute cab ride from the station or a 20 minute walk.

Next Touch footie tournament, Waegook Cook in Gumi

A message from the Touch community in Gumi
Hey all you touch teams out there, The team from Gumi is really looking forward to hosting another touch tournament. We have secured another field all measured up and ready to go. It has all the facialities; 3 t's, a covered area with tables and ice on site. So we hope to see you all there.

Depending on the number of teams we will start at either 11am or 12noon on the 30th of May (at this stage we are looking at starting the sign in at 11, the first game at 11:30 and finishing at 5). If the weather continues to improve we might be able to go through a little longer and slip in/play a decider between 3rd n 4th with monetary or beer rewards at The Cook (our sponsor Waegook Cook).

For those who came last time you will know that we appreciate the effort you make coming to the country for some grass roots style touch. You can expect an even big and better event this year. The prize giving will be at The Cook, there'll be a live band- or a DJ, the famous giant burgers, cheap n clean accomodation just around the corner, and with The Cooks great service and a range of drinking games the beers will be flowing all night... we close when the last person leaves!!!

It would be great if you could let me know at least a week ahead if you want to book rooms at the motels. It's usually two to three people per room and a room is Won 30 000, so W10 000 to Won 15 000 per person.

Cheers, The Waegook Cook Team

Korea v Hong Kong May 9 Munhak Stadium Incheon

This is a venue change......
England Counties game will still be in Seongnam....

Message from Seoul Sisters rugby

Our game against Causeway Bay is just over a week away, and I wanted to invite all of you watch. The game will take place on May 2 at 1pm on Sangmu military base, Seongnam (directions email aejoyce@gmail.com ). Since it's on a military base, we have to show a list of people before we go on - nationality and passport number are also needed. We will be taking a bus down, but both teams are very big, so we may not have room for lots of extra people. If you're interested in coming, please let me know ASAP, so I can arrange everything for you. This is going to be an exciting game, and I hope you take this opportunity to come out and support women's rugby in Korea! Hope to see you there!

HSBC Asian Five Nations gets television boost
Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU) today announced a number of enhancements in the television broadcast for the 2009 HSBC Asian Five Nations. The tournament, which involves Asia's top five rugby teams: Japan, Hong Kong, Korea, Kazakhstan and Singapore, kicks off on Saturday April 25th with matches held on consecutive weekends through Sunday May 24th.

"ARFU are delighted with the television production and distribution arrangements in 2009. We have high calibre broadcast partners including TVB, J-Sports, MBC/ESPN, Khaber TV, ESPN Star Sports, Eurosport, Ten Sports and CNBC Europe" announced Allan Payne, Chairman of the HSBC Asian Five Nations Organising Committee.

"Initial estimates are that the five live matches and highlights programme will reach a potential audience of 180 million viewers across the Asian continent and Europe with broadcast in 85 countries. With matches in the 2009 HSBC Asian Five Nations acting as the Asian zone qualifier for the 2011 IRB Rugby World Cup, (the winner of the 2010 Asian Five Nations will be Asia's sole direct entry to the RWC 2011 in New Zealand), the public interest in this tournament cannot be underestimated" added Payne.

"We will be going live from all five venues in 2009. This will be the first live rugby match ever broadcast from Almaty, Kazakhstan; only the 2nd live match from Seoul, Korea and the first from Singapore for more than 10 years" said Guy Horne, Director, Sports Rights, IEC in Sports.

IEC in Sports are ARFU's international television distributors in the majority of markets. IEC act as the production coordinators for all the host unions and provide graphics and TV promotional material, arrange commentary and create a one-hour highlights show of the entire tournamentARFU and the International Rugby Board (IRB) have made every effort to take the promotion and awareness and of elite Asian rugby to a new level over a short timeframe. Making the television product exciting and widely available is paying dividends" added Horne.

Rugby in Korea remembered

The Gloucester Valley memorial brings veteran soldiers from the Korean War back to see what they have helped to create....a peaceful stable and prosperous South Korea. For many, this is their first time back and they are amazed at the changes 55 years have brought....but 55 years has not dimmed their memory of their time here.
Talking to some of them at today's service, I heard that rugby was played throughout the war and one veteran remembered a match between the Aussies and the Kiwis on ANZAC day....he remembered the New Zealanders won by 3 points....but then again, he was a Kiwi....

Can we see this kind of picture in Korea? My long term goal is this, what I mean by the long term goal is before I die...meaning in 50 years!

뉴질랜드 홍보대사 하지원 럭비 시범 (Ji-won Ha demonstrates rugby kick at the NZ festival)

A popular actress, Ji-won Ha, demonstrates rugby place kick at the NZ festival on last Sunday. She is a publicity ambassador (PR envoy) of NZ, and the combination of Rugby + NZ + Celebrity drew huge amounts of media attention at the COEX.
Do we need another ambassador for the England Counties tour? Maybe not....because they are all rugby ambassadors!

Mori played the game of rugby union at Waseda University and developed a passion for it there, though he was never a high-level player. In June 2005, he became President of the JRFU.

A Letter from 1987

If you visit this blog regularly, you might know that I have written about my expirience with England rugby. This is a part of the story.

In 2003 after the World Cup final, I went to the Twikenham Stadium, and I accidentally found the emblem of KRU which was given to RFU when the Korea National team visited England in 1987 after the Cambridge tour in 1986.

I didn't realize that it could be an important clue for my research on the history of Korean rugby.
While preparing a presentaton on the Korean rugby history and relationship with England for the England Counties tour to Korea, I found some pictures of the Cambridge tour in 1986 and contacted the university's archivist to get more information.

Interestingly, the archivist recognised the Cambridge team manager for the tour who is still involved with the team in the picture and sent me some valuble records of the Korean team's tour in 1987.
I do not think this is the end of the story and finding the emblem of the tour at Twikenham was just a coincidence...
